  • 8,000 hectares of terraces for irrigation of lands which at the same time avoid the erosion of soils were found in the Colca Valley. Today more than 1,400 years have passed since the construction of these terraces and continue in operation, allowing the planting of potato, 32 varieties of maize, 12 of bean and up to 54 of quinoa, among other products for consumption of the habitants of the region.

Colca Canyon was known in the Colony as the Collahuas corregimiento, thus being one of the most important areas of the Peru Viceroyalty. So much so that Francisco Pizarro was entrusted to his brother Gonzalo, established in Yanque to exercise control over the Valley. Then in the Valley they lived more than 60 thousand people engaged in agricultural production, especially of maize and potatoes, which was guaranteed the power of a large population and therefore a strategic area. Later, with the arrival of Viceroy Toledo, applies the reduction of Indians and the vast population is reduced in people changing their old farmhouses across villages called "Indians reductions" in the Valley, these small towns were designed from Spain with a detailed and thorough planning; they had strict rules for its construction as that designed a checkerboard, the width of the streets, the need to implement a prison, hospital, school, haven for elderly, etc. and of course one main square and an impressive church that would help in the process of conversion to Christianity of the Indians. Thus came to have 14 people well designed and magnificent works of architecture, such as almost all the churches that exist until today.

This experience and the interaction with the settlers, changed the Indians habits and customs who began to deal with the diseases brought by the Spaniards that greatly reduced the population. Records indicate that only about 15 thousand people were at the beginning of the Republic. For the year 1630 the first mines of silver, copper and gold is discovered in the region, and is then born both interest not only for its food production, but also by the volume of exploitable labor for mining. In the Republican period the area was left until two aviators, Robert Shippee and George Jonson, at the end of the 1920s, conducted an aerofotografico survey and found a known populated Valley, which called it the "unknown Valley of the lncas".

The following year they made an expedition to the area and were the surprise of the existence of a deep canyon that has twice the depth of the Canyon of the Colorado. In the Peru is resumes use of the zone in the 75 years that on the occasion of the Majes irrigation project construction, the Colca Valley becomes accessible for the construction of new roads and infrastructure conditioned for the stay of the technicians and personal of the work. These possibilities of access and accommodation allows scholars, researchers, artists and adventurers to start to explore the Valley and discover an inexhaustible wealth of fields, historical, artistic, scientific, sporting, etc. that give popularity and international broadcasting. In this area there are 16 villages descendants direct of the Collaguas and Cabanas ethnic groups (pre-Hispanic culture of the altiplano), being the Chivay and Cabanaconde towns the most visited by tourists. Handicraft and textile work highlighted in the area and you are perceived in the elaboration of fine handicrafts pieces such as carpets and embroidery of beautiful and colorful designs, as well as the parts cut and embossed tin. They also highlight the images of carved wood elaboration.

  • Found samples of the architecture and colonial decor that synthesize the "mestizo" style that developed in the Colca Canyon from the 18th century, in each of the churches in the villages. Some churches were built with the arrival of the Spaniards to the Valley (CA. 1570) and accordingly adopted the Renaissance style of the period. Others are instead characterized by the Baroque style that is given from 1640 until 1700. The most impressive churches are those of Yanque, Lari, Cabanaconde and Sibayo.

Many of the houses in the Valley are still being built in stone with roofs of ichu (kind of straw which grows at considerable altitude). Communities women wear even costumes, long skirts, jackets with colorful embroidery and hat with Ribbon. The Colca Canyon is the habitat of animals such as the Andean condor among other 100 bird’s species, four camelid’s types like vicuñas, guanacos, llamas and alpacas. There are more than 300 plants species, of which 30 are cactus, not to mention the primitive green yareta. One of the most invaluable of the visit to the Canyon is the dawn next to the cliff where you can see, when it dawns, the approximately 20 condor’s flight.
The Valley is ideal for recreational and artistic activities such as painting, photography, poetry, among others. As is suitable for adventure sports like trekking, rafting, climbing, bicling, etc.
