MACHU PICCHU

  • With an extension comprising little more than 35,000 acres, the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu is much more than a set of archaeological sites nestled in the abrupt cloud forest. At the same time, Machu Picchu is considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. Its peculiar architectural and landscape features, and the veil of mystery that has woven to her around much of the literature published on the site, have become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. Seen from the air, the territory of the sanctuary is shown as a great book open in half, with the Urubamba River in its central part and two large chains of mountains falling either side of a deep valley covered by tropical vegetation. The historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu was recognized by UNESCO in 1983 as humanity's Natural and Cultural Heritage and on 7 July 2007, Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the new wonders of the world in a ceremony held in Lisbon Portugal.

THE SACRED VALLEY

  • Urubamba Valley, also known as the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley of Cusco is located to the North of Cusco. It is a fertile area, once habited by the Incas. Inca ruins are frequent throughout the Valley, with the two of the most representative sites of the city such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo. The Sacred Valley today is home to a number of typical Andean villages. This is a good place to see the villagers and their daily lives in the Andes.

PISAC ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

  • It is located at the top of a mountain. He was one of the most important agricultural centers of Inca culture, formed by groups of platforms and structures of architecture Inca, scattered on top of the entire mountain and on its slopes.

PISAC HANDICRAFT MARKET

  • The market of Pisac is a Sunday market (although it works almost every day) is meeting point for local communities, who come to witness the mass in quechua, socialize and to sell or exchange goods. Pisaq, like other villages was a Spanish city where European traditions with Inca merged that remains standing until today since the day of its founding in the 16th century. Eventually Pisac has become an important center of craft production and has achieved the reputation of having one of Latin America's largest craft markets.

OLLANTAYTAMBO FORTRESS

  • It is at the eastern end of the Sacred Valley. The Valley is narrow here that in Urubamba or Pisac, with the mountains closest to each side, to make a more dramatic atmosphere. Located at the foot of an ancient archaeological site, the small town of Ollantaytambo with 2000 habitants, is the most beautiful city in the Sacred Valley. The city is located above the main road and built on uneven terrain. The stone stairs are beautifully framed by stone arches. Ollantaytambo is one of the only two places in the Sacred Valley to take the train to Aguas Calientes, at the foot of Machu Picchu. Although the majority of the people take the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes directly, travel from Ollantaytambo is a shorter and less expensive train ride.

TEMPLE OF THE THREE WINDOWS

  • The Temple of the three Windows is an Inca construction that is located in the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu. This temple is one of the most emblematic structures of the complex that is interesting not only for its origin, but also because of inscriptions that still today can be seen in the walls and showing that the place already would have been discovered before 1911 when the expedition of Hiram Bingham arrived. The Temple of the three Windows receives this name precisely by three windows that has and that are larger are of the whole. It is thought that the three windows that are in this complex were made symbolically to represent through them the Tamputoco, also known as Pacaritambo. A hill that Andean legend, had three windows, from which would have emerged the “Hermanos Ayar”, along with their wives. The Temple of the three Windows is comprised of only three walls that sit on a rectangular platform. Some think that the windows seen in one of the walls of the temple were originally five, but only 3 were at the end of the set. Studies of the Temple of three Windows, also reveal that those openings, respond to a ritual purpose, since their orientation is to the Sun.
