MACHU PICCHU

  • With an extension comprising little more than 35,000 acres, the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu is much more than a set of archaeological sites nestled in the abrupt cloud forest. At the same time, Machu Picchu is considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. Its peculiar architectural and landscape features, and the veil of mystery that has woven to her around much of the literature published on the site, have become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. Seen from the air, the territory of the sanctuary is shown as a great book open in half, with the Urubamba River in its central part and two large chains of mountains falling either side of a deep valley covered by tropical vegetation. The historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu was recognized by UNESCO in 1983 as humanity's Natural and Cultural Heritage and on 7 July 2007, Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the new wonders of the world in a ceremony held in Lisbon Portugal.

OLLANTAYTAMBO FORTRESS

  • It is at the eastern end of the Sacred Valley. The Valley is narrow here that in Urubamba or Pisac, with the mountains closest to each side, to make a more dramatic atmosphere. Located at the foot of an ancient archaeological site, the small town of Ollantaytambo with 2000 habitants, is the most beautiful city in the Sacred Valley. The city is located above the main road and built on uneven terrain. The stone stairs are beautifully framed by stone arches. Ollantaytambo is one of the only two places in the Sacred Valley to take the train to Aguas Calientes, at the foot of Machu Picchu. Although the majority of the people take the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes directly, travel from Ollantaytambo is a shorter and less expensive train ride.

AGUAS CALIENTES

  • The town of Machu Picchu, formerly called Aguas Calientes. This name is derived from the thermal water sources located in the Creek that serves as a stage to the village, which congregate each dusk to hundreds of passengers, including those who complete the journey of the Inca Trail and want to recharge your batteries after the grueling days of Trek. Originally, the village consisted of a long "Street" that stretched on both sides of the railway. Over the years, the town grew to encompassing a larger area, Ravine up. It currently has a main square in addition to a busy main road that winds its way to the baths in the upper part of the Gorge.

ESPÍRITU PAMPA ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

  • The archaeological complex of Espiritu Pampa, in Vilcabamba, was sent to build by Manco Inca, not only has been the last bastion of Incan resistance against the Spanish invaders. It would have also been dominated by the Wari culture. As demonstrated by the discovery of a complex with a tomb that Mr Vilcas, maximum ruler of culture would have occupied Wari pre-Incan, which had its apogee between 600 and 1,200 of our era. It is in fact a Wari Citadel located in the area known as Espiritu Pampa, district of La Convencion, approximately 500 km from the Cusco city, in the North of the same Department. Just two kilometers separate the Inca complex of the Wari. Geographically it is located on the eastern slope of the Andes, in the middle of a forest tropical sub humid typical of high forest, in the Urubamba river basin.
